Jerome Lowenthal is an underrated American pianist and Bartók player. He has long deserved the opportunity to make a recording like this, and he makes the most of it. His "i"Out of Doors is one of the most devastatingly powerful versions of that masterpiece ever recorded, and he powers his way through the Études with tremendous elan. The Bagatelles and "i"Mikrokosmos selections are all sharply characterized and capture the Hungarian folk flavor. The recorded sound conveys the pianist's tonal color and range very well. In fact, everything about this recording is excellent; too bad there isn't more of it, but better 56 minutes of excellence than 80 minutes of mediocrity. -- Leslie Gerber
